Why you need this book,
a message from Janeen Jesse Puckett

In years of doing nails professionally, I have seen plenty of horror stories -- from nails that are just plain ugly to infections to methyl-methacrylate reactions.  Every time I wonder why these nail clients allowed themselves to be so dangerously mistreated.  Finally, I have come up with an answer.  They simply lack the knowledge of nails and the nail business to protect themselves as consumers.

Well, no longer.  I wrote The Nail Book to empower you!  You don't have to endure endless painful drilling.  You don't have to wear hazardous MMA on your nails.  You don't have to take your chances at contracting a dangerous infection due to poor sanitation practices.  And you don't have to settle for nails that make you look less than your very best.

After reading The Nail Book, you will walk into your next nail appointment with all the tools you need to protect yourself from unsafe and unhealthy practices, get the most for your money, and walk out with truly beautiful nails!

I wish it were possible to get this material into the hands of each and every nail consumer.  If every nail client was equipped with this information, it would revolutionize the nail industry from the bottom up.  Nail salons would be forced to provide the highest quality products and services, because nail consumers would no longer settle for anything less.  Why would you settle for less than the best?

Acrylic is the most common type of artificial nail product.  It originated in dentistry (where it is still used today), but was introduced as a nail enhancement in 1935. The acrylic used by nail technicians today is specifically designed for use on nails.   Acrylic nails have grown steadily in popularity, and have been the most significant influence in the growth of the nail industry to date.

Acrylic nail products are characterized by the use of a powder called polymer, and a liquid called monomer.  An acrylic brush is dipped first in the monomer and then into the polymer, creating a "ball" of wet acrylic on the end of the brush.  The acrylic is applied to the nails while wet, and sets to a hard finish in a matter of minutes.
MMA

An acrylic ingredient called methyl-methacrylate (MMA) has been deemed a health hazard by the FDA, and has been banned in many states from use in nail salons.  However, products containing MMA are still used in some salons because it is much less expensive (about 1/10 the cost of legal products) and because it produce nails that are almost unbreakable.
